How to Remove Odors Without Chemicals

Updated: May 3, 2019

Carbon products may all look similar. However, don’t be fooled into thinking that all carbon have the same properties. In fact there are well over 100 different activated carbons for multiple applications. Organic chemicals are attracted to carbon the best as carbon attracts and holds organic chemicals from vapors. Activated charcoal helps absorb and eliminate tough odors through both absorption and adsorption. With natural powers of adsorption, activated charcoal is able to hold the odors, and leave your work boots and bags smelling fresh and odor free. Activated charcoal is made by burning carbon materials, such as wood, at very high temperatures to create charcoal. The resulting product is a black, odorless carbon substance. The charcoal is then "activated" through a process that makes the charcoal extremely porous to increase surface area for toxin binding. How well the charcoal works depends on several factors including, the pore size and the original material used to made the charcoal. Activated carbon has special properties that allow it to bind to VOCs, odors, and other gaseous pollutants from the air.
