Detoxifying with Activated Charcoal

Activated carbon is a common product used to filter and purify many different substances. Believe it or not, activated carbon touches everyone’s lives. If you drink municipal water or drink decaffeinated coffee, your life involves activated carbon. Not only is commonly used to treat municipal drinking water, but it also has a detoxifying quality as it trap toxins and chemicals before the body can absorb them internally. Activated carbon has been linked to life-saving practices because it can be used to cleanse bodies, it’s a common product in poison control. You see, Activated charcoal works by trapping toxins and chemicals in its tiny pores. It doesn’t absorb the toxins, instead it works through the chemical process of adsorption where the toxin bind to the surface. Adsorption is a process that occurs when a gas or liquid accumulates on the surface of a solid. One caveat, when taken orally, activated charcoal doesn't distinguish between wanted and unwanted substances. That means it can also bind to nutrients and prescription medications, preventing them from getting into your bloodstream.
